After You Sign Up:
Step One- Pick story (something you have interest in, if you dont pick then you are assigned something. think of something you are interested in and suggest it so that you can sign up for that story)
Step Two- Brainstorm who you want to interview (make list of people to interview. always interview a student!! keep interviews with adults to a minimum. Think outside the box! Who else is involved that is not a student or a teacher. interview parents more? When people ask you questions tell them what you think)
Step Three- Come up with a set of questions (DONT ask questions that can be answered with yes or no. Questions should be open ended. think about who you are interviewing and maybe have two or three sets of questions depending on who you need to talk to. try to make it a conversation sometimes gotta think on feet still get to other questions)
Step Four- Go to the editor for the section that you are writing about (to make sure that you are giving them what you want, so that they can help you if you have questions, so that you know how much to write average story is about half a page in microsoft word in 10 point font and longer stories can be up to a page and a half)
Step Five- Outline what the story might be about (where you want to see the story go. Quote-Transition <-- makes a great story most of the time statements hard and can use questions to generate statements from questions. TELL A STORY..)
Step Six- Go do interviews
Step Seven- THe story (skip the lead and go straight into the body of the story or at least start piecing together the meat of the story, then you can figure out how to lead and finish)
Step Eight- Write the lead (first 5 words are the most crucial parts of the story!)
Step Nine- Complete the story
